iPhoto 5 gripes

I got iPhoto 5 for a bunch of reasons. First, $.19 prints. Second, I liked that I could do some more photo editing right there rather than editing everything in Photoshop. Third, I had heard rumors that the performance was supposed to be better (faster). Fourth, I liked the new books you can create. After a couple of weeks, my experience with this program has been nothing short of awful. I am running it on an iBook G3 800mHZ. By no means a speed demon, but I've been able to get by with few problems. I will also put out there that I am shooting with a Nikon D100 at the highest resolution JPEG (not TIF or NEF files) with file sizes typically around 3MB. It loads slowly. Way slower than iPhoto 4. In fact, everything is slower. I had to made the thumbnails in my library the smallest possible size to make the program usable. Then when I was trying to try some of the new editing features. When I couldn't find them, I realized that a G4 or G5 is necessary for "advanced photo editing features." OK, not Apple's fault that I don't have that. But it doesn't make it any less frustrating. So anyway, I struggled through it long enough to put together a new small book. I received it, it was bad. The photos were dark and grainy (my originals were NOT). I haven't made prints yet, but $.19 is still a good price. I'll let you know how the prints turn out after I get several hours of time to be able to edit and import my images.
