Q: WTF, yo? Where you at?
A: Right here! Hi! Thank most of you for your patience during the Omar outage of 2008. I have been pretty busy and haven't had a ton of free computer time, but I've kept up pretty well with everyone's sites.

Q: I thought you said you were moving your blog?
A: I am.

Q: But... it's still right here.
A: Yes. I have been experiencing some trouble with coming up with a suitable domain name that is both appropriate and available. I can be indecisive when it comes to things like this. And though I know I've said this before, I think I'll have the new site up --

Q: So you mean to tell me that you haven't been blogging because you can't make up your mind and pick a domain name?!
A: I sense a touch of hostility...

Q: Good.
A: Um...

Q: How's the new kid?
A: She's growing, crying, grunting, eating, peeing, and pooping. Par for the course.

Q: You take a month off and that's all you have to say about your kid?
A: Having our daughter with us has been a beautiful, life-changing experience. As soon as I get some sleep, I'll be able to coherently tell you about it.

Q: Is her on-blog name "the girl," to keep with the existing theme?
A: I'm not sure yet. Probably, though. We call the boy "the boy" at home. That's actually why I started using those names, "the boy" and "the wife." I actually say those in real life, and have been doing so since before I had a blog. But the girl goes by "baby sister" or some other nickname. I don't call her "the girl" in conversation, at least not yet. So that's why I'm not sure.

Q: How's her mid-forearm fat roll?
A: It's developing nicely.

Q: How's the boy dealing with it?
A: Very well! He loves his baby sister and is very gentle with her.

Q: Should your readers expect another month to pass before your next post?
A: No. I think it's safe to say that the break is over.

</break>

Hi there!

First, I wanted to say thanks for your comments on the last post. Thanks!

Things are going fairly well since the new kid's arrival. The boy is handling it well, and sleep deprivation isn't hitting me as hard as it did the first time around. In fact, the only complaint I have is that she doesn't respect my swaddling authority. Let me give you a little background - I believe in the power of swaddling. If I had my way, kids would all remain swaddled every night until their 18th birthday. We swaddled the boy for his first 5 months, and it was one of the best moves we made. If we didn't swaddle him, he'd fall asleep fine, but then wake himself up every five minutes with his baby reflexes causing his arms to flail all over the place. If I swaddled him good and tight, he might have tried to fight it at first, but then he'd fall asleep and stay asleep for hours and hours.

Swaddling was always my job, and I loved it. I think I've mentioned before that I often felt kind of helpless as the new dad, as there was nothing really rewarding that I could do for the kid. Swaddling was my thing. Over time, I became an expert. He kept growing, so I had to keep coming up with new and creative ways to keep him swaddled (only one of those methods involved the use of tape). I created, then successfully completed the very first (and only) Ph.D. program for swaddling. I was a Swaddle Doctor. I made people refer to me as the "Sultan of Swaddle." I considered getting that embroidered on each of my shirts.

So when the girl came along, I was eager to return to my swaddling glory days. The only problem is that she is not at all impressed by my swaddling skills. Doesn't she know who I am? I'm the Swaddle King! I'll wrap her up nice and snug, then look over at her two minutes later to find her wide awake with both arms free, striking various fencing positions. Kids these days, they need to learn to show some respect.

Anyway, other than that, things are going well.

Second, I hope the new site will be up sometime in the next week or so.

Third, remember during NaBloPoMo when I posted that video of me writing with my Fisher Space Pen underwater? Well, a few weeks ago, I got an email via my YouTube account from someone at the Fisher Space Pen company. He thanked me for posting the video, and offered me up a free space pen ink cartridge. After a brief email exchange to verify that the dude was legit, I gave him my address. Sure enough, a brand new Fisher Space Pen medium point black ink cartridge arrived in my mailbox! This was very exciting for me. Not as exciting as it would have been if Dyson had sent me a free vacuum, but it'll do.

1) I joined the circus, and will be on blog break to work on my routine.

2) I'll be on blog break because I'm training for the Olympics.

3) Me and my boyz got a callback for the next season of "America's Best Dance Crew," so I'm taking a break to practice.

4) I'm taking a break from blogging because I will be touring with NKOTB.

5) My wife gave birth to the most beautifulest baby girl earlier this week, so I'm taking a blog break in order to take the necessary time to convince myself that I'm grown up enough to talk about things like "vaginas" when the boy asks where his baby sister's penis is. I'll be doing some other stuff too, but mostly that.

In the democratic process in the last post, it looks like hearing the bad news first won the popular vote. So here it is:

I will be taking a blog break.

I'll let you take a second to dry your eyes before I continue... Ready? Ok. So yeah, I'll be taking a break. I still intend to comment on other sites when I can, but I won't be posting much here for a while. For part two of the bad news - and maybe you should sit down for this one - when I do return, it likely won't be here at omarphillips.net. I may still keep the domain name, but the blog will be removed from it. That's a move I've been wanting to make for a couple of years now, but just never thought there was a good opportunity. But since I'll be on a blog break, that's a perfect opportunity. Stay tuned for details on the yet-to-be-determined new location at some yet-to-be-determined time in the future.

For part three of the bad news, I accidentally left a small dent in your car door when the wind blew my door open too far. Sorry.

Good news coming shortly. And if you already think you might know what it is (which some of you do), please don't say anything just yet!

This past week, I turned 31. A young 31. A hip 31. 31 is the new 21. Anyway, for those who don't know the drill, here are 5 brief stories from the past week. Four are true, one is not. In fact, that one is so not true, that I'll almost be offended if you think that it is, and your name will promptly be stricken from my holiday card list. But hey, no pressure, it's all in the name of fun! Your job is to guess which story is a lie, then leave your answer in a comment. Ready? Go!

1) For my birthday, the wife got me a waffle maker. Since then, I have made (or suggested making) waffles for every single meal - morning, noon, or night. In fact, the writing of this post was delayed because I was making apple spice waffles. They were delicious, btw.

2) Several people told me that turning 31 was harder than turning 30 for them. Generally, I don't think that was true for me. I felt "older" last year, when I was leaving my twenties. In fact, the only time I really did feel old this year was when I was watching the Masters golf tournament. South African Trevor Immelman won, I'm pretty indifferent about that. And though I was miffed that Tiger didn't make a charge on the weekend, I was more upset by the fact that this is the first time that the current Masters champion is younger than me.

3) We were lucky to get excellent weather for the entire week. It was sunny and with highs ranging from the low 60's to the upper 70's all week long (we were still wearing our winter coats the week before, so this is a pretty drastic change - average highs for this time of year are in the mid 50's, and we never get sunshine). Anyway, as a result of the weather (and the fertilizer I put down the week before), the grass needed mowing. This was fine with me, as I've only been waiting since October to do it. I waited for the morning dew to burn off and got all ready to mow Saturday morning, but then I realized that it was still a few minutes before 9:30 a.m. It felt later to me, I had been up for a while. So I sat inside waiting until 10, which I thought seemed like a time that's late enough to not disturb the neighbors.

4) I was awake for a few minutes in bed on my birthday before the wife came in our room with the boy. He jumped on my bed and hollered, "Happy birthday, daddy!!" Though we're only talking about a few minutes, this was the first time that I didn't remember that it was my birthday until someone else reminded me.

5) I work at a university, and consequently spend most of my day around a bunch of college kids. I get a kick out of making them guess how old I am when they find out it's my birthday. (My informal polling has showed that college kids generally don't care about specific numbers, they refer to age using these categories: young, under 21, 21, and old.) Last year, people who didn't know my age always guessed high. The typical guesses were in the 34-35 age range. This year, most of the guesses were either 28 or 29. I'm not really sure what the difference is, but I do know that I sure do like the kids we have now way more than the ones we had last year.

Aaaand... time's up!

I thought this assignment might be a bit more challenging than the last, and for once, I was right. 30% of the photos submitted were accompanied by an email message either stating how lame the picture was, or saying how you think you can do better. I want to grab each of you by your collars, give you a small (but firm) shake, and say, "Don't you get it, man?! If you submit a photo that loosely follows the rules of the assignment within a couple of days of the deadline, you win!!" (dramatic pause) "You win!!" So if you were in that 30%, imagine that I just did that to you.

Also, several people also said they carried their cameras around with them all week and found no faces. If you really did bring your camera with you and you really did look for faces, then give yourself an "A" for effort. Actually, make that a B+. I'm not feeling that generous.

Click here to see the photos. (Javascript and Flash required, same as always.)

As always, thanks to everyone who submitted a photo. Also, thanks to NCS for the free advertising (that was free, right?). The results were great, and I even learned a few things. Most notably, I learned that I should carefully inspect any wood grain on anything I purchase. So thanks, Internet.

First, on the photo assignment. There's still a couple of hours before the deadline, but thanks to the 10 who have gotten their assignment in so far! In order, thanks to Syar, Lisa, NCS, me, Yvonne, Mrs. Monkey Butt, Tori, Daniel, Jonathan, and Aubrey. Now, the old Omar might have gone and called out some of those who said they would participate, but have not (yet). But this Omar? I'm a better man. So don't worry, Nobody, <strike>Lauren, Cadiz, Jon, Nancy Face</strike>, JustRandi, Rhonda, and others, you can all rest easy. The new Omar wouldn't dream of calling any of you out!

But for the record, I probably won't get to putting together a photo gallery until sometime on Tuesday. So if you still wanted to participate but didn't yet get a chance, or if you officially gave up because you didn't see a face anywhere, or if you took the picture but don't have a way to get it off your camera yet, you have an extra day or so to regroup, un-give up, or get a hold of the necessary cables/adapters.

Second, one day this week, I was home with the boy. I'll spare you details, but for the first time in my life, I said, "Hang on, let me wipe my own bottom first." Sorry if that was TMI, but I had to jot it down somewhere so I wouldn't forget it next time I'm scrapbooking. That day is getting its own page.

Third, given the scare of lead paint in toys these days, I thought it surprisingly refreshing when I saw this price label at Target for the Fisher Price Geotrax Grand Central Station train set:

Fourth, I'm not really a scrapbooker.

UPDATE:
Fifth, Jon did get his assignment in on time. Next time, I'm making the deadline a time that is before my bedtime, so I can only (not) call people out who are deserving prior to going to bed. My apologies, Onj.

You're right, NCS. 169 days between photo assignments is way too long. So here it is: your assignment, should you choose to accept it (and I see no reason why any cool or sensible person shouldn't), is to take a picture of a face.

Simple, right?

Wrong! There's a catch! It can't be a person's face. Or an animal's. In fact, I'm even going to rule out things like statues or dolls. So if you want to get technical, the assignment isn't really for you to take a picture of a face. Instead, find something that looks like a face. Maybe a cloud formation, milk spilled on the counter, or that face-looking birthmark on your forearm. Do you see Elvis' face in your toast? Take a picture and submit it! Then sell the toast on eBay (note that I don't think you're allowed to sell food on eBay). Do you see a fallen tree on the side of the road that looks surprised? Do what I did! Carefully pull over, then lean awkwardly out your passenger side window and take a picture.

Need more examples? Look at Elastic's chihuahua dresser. Or this happy chair, found on icanhascheezburger.com.

Before you all angrily comment that you don't have time to drive around town looking for smiling chairs, let me clarify. Though I think it's more rewarding if you find it (plus, searching will encourage you to keep your camera close to you, which is one of the main points of these photo assignments), your "face" can be man-made. It doesn't have to be natural or accidental. But if you make your "face," just try to be creative. Go make some chocolate chip cookies, and for one of the cookies, place the chips so it looks like there's a smiley face. It'll make the people in your house happy AND you'll have completed your assignment (given that you take the picture before your kid/significant other/roommate/sibling eats that cookie).

Submit your photos by email to photo@omarphillips.net

Photos are due in by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Sunday, April 13th. And if history is any indicator, many of you will beg for an extension on the due date, and I'll say "OK" because I'm a softie, which means you may end up having a few extra days beyond that.

What are you waiting for? Get to shooting!

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of omarphillips.net. It's fitting, though completely coincidental, that the day falls on April Fools' Day.

It's been a pretty full year. It started with my 30th birthday. Not long after that was the Duck Crisis of 2007 (scroll down a few posts on that page to see the full story). Speaking of, there may be a duck crisis of 2008 to write about soon. More on that later.

There was the trip to San Francisco for WWDC, where I couldn't walk two feet without seeing signs warning me of various hazards.

I attended a Wiggles concert, which was undoubtedly the best concert I went to all year. It may have also been the only concert I attended.

A few months later was the most fun omarphillips.net Photo Assignment ever. So fun, in fact, that I've been scared to try to do a new one, because I hate for there to be a drop in the level of fun. But it has been too long, so dust of your cameras. I sense that there may be a new assignment coming soon...

Then there was NaBloPoMo, where I managed to post for 30 straight days. During that month, I learned that I don't have 30 straight days worth of stuff to say. For reference, this post right here is my 30th post since the end of NaBloPoMo, four months ago. Also in November, I won roughly 150 "Blog God" Awards, including a the first ever "Lifetime Blog Excellence Award." Definite resumé builder.

In January, I learned about the power of Steve Harvey's hair. In February, I published my first stop-motion animated movie, which was coincidentally released on "Omar Appreciation Day." A few weeks later, I posted for the 500th time.

Some quick year three statistics, because it's what I do:

121 - Number of new posts
2031 - Number of comments
117 - Number of countries/territories from which someone visited
2964 - Number of hits from search engine queries that included the words "Steve Harvey" (more than half of those occurred in one week)

As always, thank you all very much for stopping by. Extra thanks to those who have commented. Double extra thanks to those who got me a new car or bought me an iPhone. (Note that neither of those things has happened yet, but I'm banking on someone wanting to find out what it means to get "double extra" thanked.)

And if you want your own personalized thank you note, I made one for you here. Ignore the fact that the date on that post says March 31, 2006. The beauty of mad libs is that they're as new as you make them.

I'm a man of slightly above average intelligence. And I'm not afraid of the kitchen. Heck, I've documented enough pie making adventures on this site, so you already knew that. But there is something have kept from you, until now. I suffer from KCSAD (typically pronounced as if it were the two words "kick" and "sad" together), or Kitchen Container Spatial Awareness Disorder.

For those who may not be familiar, let me explain what KCSAD is. KCSAD essentially makes a person unable to accurately correlate the spacial capacity of available food storage containers with the amount of leftover food. It's a disorder that, in terms of its medical acceptance, is in its relative infancy. The disorder affects men at a much higher rate than it does women, but women are by no means immune.

Growing up, I never even knew such a thing existed. If my mom said, "Put away the rest of the dinner," I would simply slap the lid on the pot and put it in the refrigerator. Two pots? I'd stack 'em. This strategy got me right through my adolescent years. Everything changed when I got married. It wasn't a direct result of marriage, but as a wedding gift, we received several Rubbermaid food storage containers, varying in size from "curiously small" to "unnecessarily big."

I distinctly remember the day when I first suspected something was wrong. We had a nice spaghetti dinner, and we had some leftover sauce. When asked to put it away, I grabbed what I thought would be an appropriate container. About halfway through pouring, I wondered aloud, "I wonder if this is all going to fit?" Needless to say, it wasn't going to fit. But because I thought it would be close, I kept pouring...

I'm always conscious of that moment when I'm putting food away, to this day. And yet still, I'm unable to select a correctly-sized container. I don't always underestimate storage needs, in fact, I'd say the opposite is true. I usually choose a container that is too large, then overcompensate with subsequent containers. For example, for dinner last night, we had a wonderful veggie and chicken stir fry with rice. First, I put away the rice. I know it didn't all settle properly in the container, but I can still see the bottom in some spots:

So then I put away the stir fry.

Note that I was only able to close the lid because I kept eating items from off the top until it would seal. Even still, as you can see in the picture below, the vegetables on top were fighting for their lives under that enormous pressure.

I'm not looking for sympathy, my goal here is just to make people aware of the disorder. If you ask your significant other to put away the leftovers, here are some of the typical responses of those with KCSAD so you can look out for them:

He/she pretends like he/she didn't hear you

He/she eats the remaining leftovers as to avoid putting them away, even if he/she just said "wow, I'm stuffed" prior to you asking

He/she leaves the food in the pot/pan/dish in which it was cooked, and attempts to put it in the fridge as-is, regardless of whether there is room for such a container

Note that these are also symptoms of laziness, which often leads to KCSAD being misdiagnosed as laziness.

At this time, KCSAD has no cure, though its effects can be mitigated using some simple techniques. For example, you can buy storage containers that are all the same size, or provide a storage container to the person you are asking to put the leftovers away. Like I said, simple things like that will allow people with KCSAD to avoid what is often one of the most difficult parts of their day.

Thank you for your attention to this matter that is near and dear to my heart.

My NCAA Tournament Brackets - I picked Georgetown to win it all. They won't, because they lost today to Davidson College, a school I had to Google to verify its existence. Needless to say, I'm sad. My long history of futility in attempting to pick winners of sporting events continues.

My brother's hair - He cut it. He last cut it during Clinton's first term in office. He last cut it before Tiger Woods had a single PGA tour win. Back when people were walking around saying "you complete me," and "show me the money!" Macarena was tops on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. I can not overstate how surprised everyone was by this move. His hair was 3 years long when he met his wife, 5 years long when he had his first kid. He had dreadlocks down to his butt, and with no notice, they were gone. I'm pretty sure a few tears of joy fell from my mom's eyes.

My health - Remember how I had the super-plague illness a few weeks back? I'm still not right. Still coughing, and I think I picked up some sort of sinus thing.

My footwear - I did finally find a new pair of shoes. It only took one additional store, and about 20 minutes of internal debate. It's not about fashion, it's about getting the most bang for my buck. I could get $80 shoes that are really comfortable but not quite the right color. Or, I could get $40 shoes that are also not quite the right color, a little less comfortable, and $40 cheaper. In the end, they will both smell like sweaty feet. The right choice was clear.

My new look - After I mentioned the new glasses and the shoe search, a few people questioned why I didn't include pictures. So I was sitting around with the boy, and decided to ask for his help. But since I don't trust him to use my camera, I gave him some tools I can trust him with:

After I took that picture of his rendition of me, he decided to add my beard. And tentacles. Here's that version.

3 - Number of significantly-sized holes in my current pair of work shoes.

25 - Approximate number of dollars spent on my current work shoes.

2.5 - Approximate number of years since I bought those $25 shoes. In terms of dollars spent per day worn, I think it's fair to say that I have won.

4 - Number of stores I have gone to so far in order to find a new pair of work shoes.

2 - Number of pairs I've narrowed it down to so far. Both are extremely comfortable, but one is too reddish-brown for me to commit, the other a little too much on the tan side. The few pairs I found that are the color I want didn't fit me very well.

75 - Approximate number of dollars required to buy the cheaper of the two pairs of shoes I like. This is just a few dollars less than how much I've spent on my last 4 pairs of work shoes combined (though one of those pairs was free).

20 - Number of minutes I spent in the store wearing the too reddish-brown pair, trying to convince myself that I should buy them in spite of their slightly-off color, the price, and the slightly weird shoelaces (see below).

10 - Number of minutes I spent looking for a different pair of shoelaces for those too reddish shoes, because I'm not wild about the ones that come with it. It shouldn't normally take this long to look through the available shoelace options, but I spent about 8 of those minutes trying to figure out what the difference was between 36" men's shoelaces and 36" women's shoelaces. They only had the color I wanted in the women's shoelace section, but I was not OK with buying women's shoelaces without knowing what the difference is. I still don't know.

0 - Number of pairs of new work shoes I ended up buying.
