Weekend Photo Assignment
It was one of my new year's resolutions to take more photos. I'm doing OK with that so far (at least better than I'm doing with the exercising or eating well).
The times I remember taking the most (and typically the best) photographs were when I was taking a photo class a few years ago. The reason I shot more is because I was given assignments of things to shoot. So I started giving myself little photo assignments so that I would have an excuse to go do some shooting. Then I thought, "self, there's a whole internet out there FULL of digital cameras and creativity. You should invite them to participate!"
With that in mind, I bring you the first ever omarphillips.net weekend photo assignment. If you choose to participate, there is but one overall rule:
- You must either take OR be a subject in your photo (or both, if you can handle it)
This weekend's assignment: FUN
I'm starting with an easy one. Take a photo that somehow involves something you consider to be fun. This is purposely very open-ended. If you like to walk your dog in the park, take a picture. If you consider perfecting the imprint of your butt in your couch fun, get the camera on one of your trips to the bathroom. If you enjoy dripping hot candle wax on your eyelids, take a picture, then get some help. If you enjoy making stupid words out of your child's bath toys, snap a photo!

When you have your picture, you can either post it on your own blog (and comment here to let me know), or send it to me via email and I'll put together a gallery.
There are no winners, this is not a contest. There are, however, losers. They are the ones who don't participate.
Dust off those digital cameras and get to SNAPPING. Your assignment is due by Sunday night.

I just realized that I totally could have spelled "U FARTED" instead. Dammit!

Lovely. I'm a loser by default. I don't have a digital camera!

Oooh! Game! I love games. I want to play! Sunday, night. Right, I'll just e-mail.

This sounds like homework. Fun homework - but homework nonetheless. What if it robs the fun from the otherwise fun activity? Hm. So much to ponder.

Cate, a loser? No way! Most places - Walmart is one - can provide digital pics from negatives or prints. When you submit a roll of print film for processing they'll provide digital pics online, either free or cheap. There's a checkbox or something on the film envelope. Also, Walmart and/or CVS sells disposable digital cameras.
I said:
cate - But do you have access to a digital camera? I thought so.
katie - That's the spirit!
glo - I left off the H word specifically because I didn't want it to seem like work. But essentially, yes. It's homework. Except I have no authority over any of you, so you can all choose to blow it off.
I said:
Raj - You snuck in there right before I posted the previous comment. And yes, Cate, he's right. You have no excuse. Pfft.

I'm so doing this contest! But my digital camera is from 1998 so expect it to be a crappy quality picture. Seriously, my flash card is 32 megs...
I said:
17 - I'd like to reinforce that this is not a contest.
That said, I plan to kick all of your butts and win.

I accept this non-homework, non-contest with no winners but a few losers, assignment. I possess a digital camera. Is there any limit to the number of entries we can have? Like, if I take 427 pictures that I feel are all of superior quality, can I submit them all? Do you have any preference on size or format? I’m only using a 3.2 MP camera, so even at the highest setting the pics aren’t obscenely large… I was looking over the fake syllabus and I didn’t see that listed anywhere. I don’t want to be D.Qed on a technicality… Thanks!

Not if I can help it. That, of course, is from one non-competitive man to another.

Hey, my weekend starts early (I don't work Fridays) and whaddaya know, I've already entered. Without even knowing about it. Cats, duvet, knitting, Buffy... admittedly, the Buffy is off-camera and the knitting is *just* seen (bottom left, see that green string?) but that's totally my idea of fun.
Okay. I can do better. I just wanted to make an early, desperate bid for non-loser status.
I said:
onj - Of course there's no limit! But if anyone submits more than 10, they run the risk of being killed by my henchmen. As for file size, it doesn't matter. Unless the files are over 10MB. When we reach that level, then the henchmen come back into play.
X - Everyone who participates is a winner. 2nd place winner, 3rd place winner, etc.
cadiz - That worked out well! So you have no excuses. Not that I'm saying I expected excuses out of you.
scroob - I would have let it count, except it was posted before the non-contest homework assignment. But it does secure your non-loser status.

I've sent in my entry. Step up, losers.

In this non-contest, Nadia wins for first entry submitted.
Four non-losers so far! Keep 'em coming!

for a second i thought, "oh, i'll have time this weekend to do this!"
and then i remembered that it's sunday, early evening and that i'm here for another 4 hours and that i just completely lost ANOTHER weekend to work.
curses!

Done, on my own blog. (I wasn't going to trust you with that, after *ahem* previous exposure.)
You could consider it a double entry, since taking the photo was in itself something Beloved considers fun. (I did a version myself with my camera, but his came out better.)

mine has been sent, hopefully not too late...

9 people got their assignments in on time. I got a few surprise submissions, and there were a few people who did NOT participate that I was also surprised about. But I ain't mad at you. And I'll even refrain from calling you the L word.
I'm putting a gallery together, it'll be up later today. Thanks to those who played along!

It's okay. You can say it. I'm a loser without a digital camera. The poll results have just reinforced that for me.
