Is there no middle ground?
Back on August 10th, I wrote this post poking fun at my local zoo for sugar coating the struggles of Roscoe the rhino. I think the zoo could have done a better job of telling the public what is really going on, without making it seem like everything is A-OK.
This past weekend, we went to a different zoo. (Hey man, back off. I like zoos.) However, this place had the opposite problem, where they seemed to err on the side of giving too many of the gory details. Take this sign, for example, where they offer tips on which endangered primates are the best for killing by gunfire:
So it's either cartoons and boo boos, or death by gunfire. Perhaps I'm being too idealistic, but I think there's a middle ground between those two extremes that the people who make these signs should be shooting for. No pun intended.
And now that I think more about it, I'm starting to question that burger I ate at the zoo's restaurant.

I liked the zoo when it was just the zoo, without the commentary.

The Mandrills are a vanishing animal??!!!??? What? Say it isn't so!
I thought Barbara had enough sisters to continue a tradition of delightful lite country/gospel music forever. Or is that Mandrell? I get the two species confused sometimes.

Mandrils are an endangered species because they look like bloody mutants. Fleshy, multicolored faces and pink butts? If I were one of the first Europeans colonizing Africa and one of those came running at me, I'd shoot it.
Of course, I'd probably shoot anything in Africa if it started running at me. Don't deny it! You would too!

Haboob is dead, long live haboob.
I finally got around to replacing word verification with another anti-spam system. Honestly, I'm kind of sad to see haboob go. I may still write haboob at the end of all my comments anyway, like Becky does.

So, if several Mandrill's can be shot at once for standing their ground, does that mean that the age old adage of, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" doesn't ring true? They would actually fare better individually than as a pack that attracts hunters. Hmmmm.
I'm using this zoological fact to justify my own instinct of avoiding the general public.
