Music Quiz Answers
Before I start, if you want to try the music quiz before reading the answers, go here.
Pencils down! The arbitrarily assigned time limit is up.
This quiz was fun for me to put together, I hope you all enjoyed it (and thanks to those who have already said that you did, your checks are in the mail). In terms of difficulty, it was exactly what I was aiming for. Nothing went unanswered, at least one person got every song/artist. I was worried some may be too obscure, which is why I ended up giving some hints. (I'm guessing I gave a few of you at least one point with that Black Eyed Peas hint.)

And now for the winners:
Second runners-up, with 15 points each: Tayster and Becky
First runner-up, with 16 points: Wendela
The winner, and newly crowned omarphillips.net name that tune champion of August 2006, with 17 points: Jonathan
(I had this whole paragraph written out about Jonathan being a lurker, and then as soon as I saved the draft of the post, he left two comments. So jonathan, either you have good timing, you're a mindreader, or you've got a key logger on my laptop. Fess up.)
There were several song-version issues that came up when scoring, but the most significant is with regard to song #2. Tayster and Cadiz guessed "Stutter" by Joe. First of all, I'm deeply offended that either of you two thought I had a Joe song in my iTunes playlist. Second, while the Joe song that used that beat was not the correct answer, I couldn't verify with 100% certainty that the 15 second clip I posted does not occur in Joe's song. After almost giving in and awarding them the two points each, I found an answer. In my original post, I indicated that no songs since 2000 made the quiz. Joe's "Stutter" originally came out in April of 2000, while the remixed version including this beat was released even more recently. (Those two points would have given Tayster a share of the title, so that's why this one clarification was necessary.)
Thanks for playing, internet.

I anxiously await the next quiz where I will undoubtedly do no better.

i cannot believe i didn't remember the pharcyde one. however when you're inundated with Mystikal scratchily screaming in the background, how can you not erase any previous versions in your mind?
freaking sampling.
but i'm not making excuses. c'mon omar, admit it. you know you love yourself some mystikal.
I said:
You got 14 jon, that really isn't bad. If there was a 3rd runner up, you would have tied for it. But if I went to a third, then the people who were fourth runners-up would complain... where do I stop?
I said:
I'll admit to having two versions of the same Mystikal song on my playlist. I'm not sure if that qualifies me as loving some Mystikal. I hope not.

of course a newbie, a no-name comes in and swoops up the prize.
where are all your bogus rules now to force the winner to be a KNOWN commenter, huh?
what was my score anyhow?
Jonathan said:
Thank you Omar, I am pleased to accept this very prestigious and coveted award.
As for how I thwarted your “Lurker” posting, I am told by my advisors I should claim it was my good timing. If word gets out I can read minds or that I have access to the key logger on your system suspicions would be raised and allegations brought against my Name that Tune victory. I can’t let that happen – I just had good timing!
Thanks again

cool, third place, not bad. though i don't share very well.
my word verification is haboob, by the way.

I knew the Pharcyde one, Cadiz. We should have gotten together to cheat.

I had no idea about Pharcyde and The Incredible Bongo Band. It's that whole being old thing, I guess. I'm going to have to broaden my knowledge base to make Jonathan sweat a little next time. :) Hey, I'm more than happy to have made first runner-up.
Thanks for the quiz, omar.

Darn that Joe! He has done nothing but ruin my life since he started.
I blame him for everything wrong in this world. (global warming, 9/11, oil price hike, etc.)
I said:
Wendela, that Incredible Bongo Band version of Apache was from 1973!
Tayster, I think Joe just gave your number to a bunch of telemarketers, also.
Full scores:
Omar: 20
Johnathan: 17
Wendela: 16
Tayster: 15
Becky: 15
Jasmine: 14
X: 14
Jon: 14
Cate: 13
Cadiz: 11
Carrot: 10
Viking: 9
Elastic: 8
Jackie O: 7
Sarah: 7
Justin: 5
Glo: 4
Rest of the world: 0
In all fairness to Glo, had this quiz been about identifying vegetables or matching foods with nutritional values, she'd have kicked all your butts.

The reason I didn't take the quiz was because I figured I wouldn't know any of the answers. And, after seeing the answers, there's only one that maybe I would have recognized. So I would have done worse than Glo, only I wasn't brave enough to try.
Also, playing random music clips at work, while it probably wouldn't get me fired, would certainly prompt a lot of strange looks.
Jon said:
I’m actually going to knock myself down to 13 because I don’t think I could have come up with the Black Eyed Peas on my own. That’s the only hint that helped me. The other hinted songs I either already knew, or would have never guessed anyway. For A Little Less Conversation (a song on regular rotation in many of my mixed CD’s) I think I would have said, “This song should make you want to do one of two things, either rob three casinos, or play soccer on a boat in the middle of the ocean.”
By the way, Congrats on the perfect score Omar. You must have trained like nobody’s business!
Lianne said:
Can we do a classical music one next?
Glo, Cate, and I would totally rock.
Glo said:
Dead last! That's awesome!
See - I have this goal. I'm either first, in the middle, or dead last. Okay. So, the place I don't like to be is "towards the end" - no one notices that person.
But dead last?! Dang. That's awesome!
Tayster said:
If you do decide to follow Lianne's advice and do classical music next, could you please at least make it all Beethoven? I think I could name most of his work.
Especially that song they used in the McDonalds ad years ago.
Or was that Mozart?
Oh well.
HABOOB!!!!!!

Ok, in hopes gain the respect, love and admiration of you all. As well as avoid another scenario of where I as “a newbie, a no-name” comes in and swoops up the prize – I am offering this post as a pad to get the rest of you 1 step closer to Omar’s 4000th comment.
Good luck to all and happy commenting
I sure hope I don’t regret this when the prize for that one comes out

and i think that there should be some kind of rule that says that if one of the songs HAPPENS to be your ringtone, you get bonus points.
not that i am unhappy with my ranking, because i am, but i'm just saying.
Becky said:
then again, my ex-husband was a son of a preacher man, so i might have to forfeit points, based on that fact.

i think mystikal was the inspiration for all those stupid screamy people these days (ahem, lil jon, yingyang twins, etc.) i CANNOT wait for that to be out of style already.
however, the more i think about it, mystikal could be an effective alarm clock in the morning. WAKE UUUP! WATCH YOSELF! AAAAAAAAAAGH! that'd be enough to scare me out of bed.
Viking said:
Ok, I'm not at all surprised that I missed the ones I missed. In fact, you could put them in another quiz tomorrow and I'd miss them again.
I'm fairly sure Will Smith used the Sugarhill Gang version though...
Haboob! Jump on it! Jump on it! Jump on it!

I suck, but not as badly as GLO. Finally, my life dreams are realized and I'm better than somebody at something.

Bongo Band, incredible or not- I had no idea of its existence. Even back in '73. I guess at that time I was just a little kid trying to get to stay up late to see Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on t.v. (or maybe it was to watch Emergency!)
Yeah, make another quiz w/classical, jazz, maybe even zydeco. I think old school R&B would be good.
(pad, pad)
I said:
Viking, you're absolutely right that Will Smith did dance to the Sugar Hill Gang version of Apache. I tried to make hints that would help with EITHER the song title or artist, but not both.
Becky, way to pad your way to being the 4000th commenter!
