By the Numbers: Almost 5000th Comment Edition
I've saved the comment notification email from every comment received at omarphillips.net. The following numbers are compiled from those messages.
----
17 - The number of commenters who have left more than 100 comments.
7 - The number of commenters who have left more than 200 comments.
3 - The number of commenters who have left more than 300 comments.
3 - The number of commenters who have left more than 400 comments.
1 - The number of commenters who have left more than 500 comments. Also, remarkably, this is the number of comments separating the top two non-Omar commenters (as of 11:59pm EST on 1/18/2007).
0 - The number of commenters not named Omar who have left more than 500 comments.
1,000,000 - The number of times easier it would have been to compile these stats if I had either stuck with Blogger, or required an email address for commenting all along (if an email address isn't required and isn't entered, the comment notification email appears to come from my email address, thus making it impossible to sort the messages by sender).
331 - Number of comment notification emails including the word "vole."
380 - The number of comment notification emails including the word "love."
122 - The number of comment notification emails including the word "hate."

Are the numbers inclusive? So the commenter with more than 500 is also included in the 400, 300, 200, an 100 totals?
how many say Haboob?
I said:
Surprisingly, only 60 with "haboob" and 54 with the word "pad."
And yes, the numbers are inclusive. The same three people that are over 300 are also over 400.

I'm amazed.
By the stats and your dedication at compiling them.
C'mon. Now you gotta share the names.

I think I've mentioned before that I'm a huge stat freak myself. I'm quite curious as to who these high volume commenters are... although, knowing what I know, I think I have a rough idea... I'll wager that one of them has gold member status... by the way, "by the numbers" is definitely one of my favorite regular installments... second only to the quizzes... speaking of which, when is the last time we had a quiz? and what's the record for use of ellipses in a comment?

5000th comment!!!!!!!
Nadia said:
NO! I was thisclose to double-commenting, but thought, "Eh, what're the odds".
BAAHHH.
*mumbles* Congratulations, Jon.
You too, Omar.
Hmph.

"5000 & 2nd" Comment!
Woohoo! *dances like a spaz*
And I'm pretty sure Becky will take the honors for both 'pad' and 'haboob.' Yeah. I. Pay. Attention.
Note to Nadia: if Omar hadn't taken 4998, you'd have been 5000. I'm just saying.
(Congratulations to Omar. And Jon. And Nadia, for 5000 not counting Omar.)
;-)
Radioactive Jam said:
Waitaminute. If Omar hadn't taken 4998... then Jon *wouldn't* have been 5000. And then Nadia... might not have even left her second comment. And that would have meant...
Gaah!
*sigh*

Jam - My heads hurts.
As does my heart.

So you are saying that you love and miss Blogger?
glo said:
Boy. I bet the competition is pretty intense among those top commenters. I'd expect to see the word 'pad' a lot more often in the coming weeks.
glo said:
Oh - crummy - I forgot to ask - what is the prize for 5000? Does it include one of those happy gold tickets, Willy Wonka?
I said:
Becky's responsible for 24 haboobs (40%) and 14 pads (26%).
I am not really missing Blogger that much, no. I'm too much of a control freak.
You were so close, Nadia. So close.

I've made like...hmmm...I don't know how many comments. Maybe 20? Whatever it is, it's not enough to go gold, or silver for that matter.
I said:
That was #38, carrot! Don't underestimate yourself. (And for the record, gold/silver status has nothing to do with comment counts.)
Syar said:
I sorta miss counting all my comments. I don't think Blogger makes it any easier, but you would know more than I. How many do I have?
Pad,lily-pad,pad.
Nadia said:
*huff*
I guess I'll just learn to live with *winces* #4999 and *winces again* #5001.
Someday, I'll be able to type that without hurting.
You know what would help, though? Knowing how many comments I have. I'd venture 30ish?
Becky said:
all weekend, as i tried to exist offline, i could tell that someone was talking about me... my ears were burning, i guess...
congrats, jon, and you're welcome for all the padding and haboobing i contributed.
Becky said:
and can i just say that "haboobing" is my new favorite word?
I said:
Syar - 236 - Blogger makes it easier because when you get a comment notification email, it shows the "from" as the name of the commenter. Movable Type shows the "from" as being the email address of the commenter, unless no email address is included. In that case, it shows my email address as the "from" address. So it required some creative filtering to be able to easily separate comments by commenter.
Nadia - 148
Becky - 146 - And thanks for all the haboobery.

And this is supposed to make me feel better? It's because I don't use paragraphs, isn't it? I knew it.
Lia said:
That's serious dedication to a post, to spend the amount of time I'm sure it took to put these stats together. And all I can say is, hmm, I wonder where I fit in.
Becky said:
hahaha... haboobery...
I said:
Lia - After your two today, you're at 98. You've almost joined the 100 club!
Carrot - We're cool until you stop using punctuation.
glo said:
Hey! Answer my question! I matter as much as Syar and Becky! (Perhaps - but let's not haggle details.)
Jon said:
I am humbled. I'm not worried about the prize, I feel honored just to be #5000. That is a prize all it's own.
However, in a few days, after the magnitude of it all has really sunk in, I may get an ego about it and request that everyone address me as Mr. 5000.
fair warning.
Lia said:
Wow! Almost three digits! But now I'm stuck at 99, since I like palindromes. Luckily, the next one is only two comments away.
cadiz12 said:
congratulations, mr. 5000. and congratulations to you, mr. phillips. very good work everyone. i can't believe i've missed out on this so long!
I said:
There will be some sort of prize, I just haven't finished concocting it yet.
Jon - 258
Cadiz - 470
RaJ - 245
Elastic - 184
Glo - 472
cadiz12 said:
whoa. that's pretty dang close.

Nadia said:
For the record, I totally meant to type 130. *blush*
