More Zoo Signage
Some of you may remember a post I wrote last year, about a sign at a zoo that taught me which primates are easiest to shoot and kill. A couple of weeks ago, we went back to that same zoo. And though I didn't get any good hunting tips this time, I did run into this cute little fella (click the image to view the full sign):
I had never heard of the Rock Hyrax prior to this trip, yet I am now convinced that the Rock Hyrax hates me and wants me dead. This animal is a small, furry, distant relative of the lovable elephant, you'd think they'd be able to find a picture that didn't give the kids another reason to soil their pants.

Somewhat vole-like, if you ask me.
Also, the front teeth are actually believed to be the remnants of tusks? Why can't they be plain believed? Something about that just irks me.

did you say that he's the distant relative of the ELEPHANT? i'm sorry, but he seems a little closer on the family tree of the psychotic squirrels on the campus of my old university.

What are you all talking about? I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't looking at a small, furry elephant. It's pretty obvious if you ask me.
Most importantly though, what I wouldn't give to have my feet act like suction cups!! Holy crap! I'd be walking all over the outsides of tall office buildings, making myself the bane of window washers everywhere! Imagine a world where people could do that... I would want to live in that world.

What a cool name. I mean, Rock Hyrax. Sounds like the cool kid in high school who made out with girls under bleachers and had a car. And was nine years old or something. AND while being all cool and make-outable, he could climb walls with his suction cups. Talk about the rodent McDreamy.

I know this totally dates me, but in the book Born Free, the author befriends several rock hyraxes... one named Patty if I remember correctly. It became her pet.
And I totally agree with Syar...

i think he was just caught in mid-yawn - that's definitely a yawning tongue. he's probably tired from all that rock-suctioning he's been doing all day.
or, he could have gotten ahold of a bad bulb, and he's about to puke it all over the camera.
