Dear Omar,
I was going to read your post, honest I was. But then! For some reason, I suddenly remembered that book seven of Harry Potter is coming out this Saturday, and I'm like, totally excited to buy it! I may even join those kerraazyyy midnight queues! What about you? Wait, maybe you're not familiar with the series. Oh, you're such a Muggle (that's non-magical folk in Potterspeak)! No worries. I'll get you up to speed, no need to thank me.
See, Harry Potter is this teenage wizard who goes to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His best friends are Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. That's right, Hermione, like in Greek mythology. Ooh, I don't know if you know this, but Lindsay Lohan played her on a SNL skit, you should check it out when you get the chance. Anyway, he's mentored by this guy called Dumbledore - Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore to be exact - who died in the last book, which was a lot sadder when I reread it for the third time last night than I remember.
There's a lot more to Harry Potter than that, but if you'll have to read books one through six to find out the rest!
So, to sum:
Harry Potter Hermione Wizard Hogwarts Muggle Dumbledore Book seven Books one through six book buy bought midnight.
Got that? I knew you would. I'm going to delve right back into your post now, promise. I wonder what magical things you'll have to say to me today...
Love,
Nadia

He is not alone. I know a few people. I was once one of those people. I scoffed through the first four books. Avoided the first movie for as long as I could, but then out of sheer boredom, I watched it and was forever hooked. I understand both sides. It's not for everyone. I'm willing to accept that some people are just so fed up with the hype that they could never really enjoy it anyway. Forcing the book on someone like that isn't going to do anyone any good.
But I do look forward to the day when The Boy grows up to be the biggest Harry Potter fan of all time and begs his father to regale him with tales of what it was like to be alive when the books first came out. He will be perched on the end of his bed, wearing his HP glasses, a Gryffindor cloak and holding a wand, staring back up at his father with a starry-eyed look of wonder and fascination...

So what I'm understanding is that we should refer to him as "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named".
In just 5 days I’ll be able to hold the manuscript…Mine. All mine.

Omar Phillips just suddenly got a whole lot fancier with the new header and I HEART it even more than I did before for its proclaimed Harry Free Zone.

This has to be the most subtle-- okay maybe not.

Nadia, why do you hate me?
I did see one of the movies, though I couldn't even tell you which one. It came out in the early summer of 2004, that's all I know.

i'm sure this is automatically canceled out by the abundance of hype, but i got hooked on HP about a year after the first book came out and was quietly addicting readers.
i had this extremely difficult law class, for which the instructor was cool but very tough. after a mindboggling lecture about some loophole he ended the class with a small speech about this great book he was reading to his kids at bedtime. he said it's the first book he's ever seen that's made him eager to open and reluctant to put down, even after his children are asleep. i figured if someone so smart and articulate was recommending a kids' book, i ought to check it out. i got it and read it all in nearly one sitting.
after that, i was singing the praises for quite a long time (hype from the movies irritated even me). i know you're not much of a reader, omar, but honestly it's good stuff. perhaps when the boy gets into it later you might get hooked, too. but i do say give the books a chance (or at least book on tape)-- the entertainment lasts so much longer than the movie.

I am so with you on this. I have seen exactly one HP movie (the first) and haven't read any of the books. However I do have several friends who are HP fans and they are starting to eat away at my resolve not to read the books. I will try to stay strong.
