Rock the vote
A few of you who are linked on the sidebar seem to have noticed that your "cool point" values have decreased a bit. This is the result of a change I made a couple of weeks ago, to make the number indicate the number of posts commented on rather than the total number of comments.
So I'll pretend like this is a democracy and let the masses vote. Should the numbers indicate total number of comments, or total number of posts commented on?

My vote is for total number of comments.
I also vote that everyone who votes should get 5..no, 20 cool points. 'Cause voting is cool.

I totally agree with my twin.
And how come when I move the arrow over MY name it doesn't say "Cool since... Forever." It says nothing. Am I still not cool?

I'm commenting again just so when you change it back I will have more comments.

too many unknowns. can't say. except that i vote for comments, because otherwise, all the "pads" and "haboobs" would have been in vain.

tie it to the posts.
shake up the establishment
and since I comment about three times a year, I really will not be shedding too many a tear, for I will never be one of the cool kids with their iPhones and their antiestablishment t-shirts

What about putting both numbers up?
Something like: Name (PC, TIC)
Or
You could even add something like percentage of posts commented on.
Name (PC, TIC, PC/OP)
If you wanted to get real crazy you could do the percentage of all Comments to the site.
Name (PC, TIC, PC/OP, TIC/AC)
Key:
PC = Posts commented on
TIC = Total Individuals Comments
OP = Omar's Posts
AC = All comments(everyones) to OmarPhillips.net

I'm waaaayyyy ahead of most of your commenters anyway. I don't have to make these ground-breaking decisions. That's for the "little people" beneath me to decide.

it took so long for people to even notice the change in the first place; does it even really matter?
there's nothing wrong with multiple comments, but i think that whatever you choose, omar, it should reward quality over quantity.

Jonathan brings up an interesting idea... is it possible to have a ridiculously long statistical break down of cool points? That way, all the numbers are out there, and we can choose what we think is cool. Maybe some people think it's cooler to comment on lots of posts, and maybe some people think it's cool to comment on a few posts, but leave 30-40 comments when they do.
This way we can separate OP.NET readers into two warring factions and perhaps, however unlikely it may seem, create a blog musical based on the ensuing comments.
I imagine exchanges like this...
"I deal in volume. I've left 263 comments in the last 3 days. What you got?"
"Kid, I've been here since before you even knew what a blog was! Shut your mouth and show some respect!"
Then the dancing would start. Probably lots of snapping too a la West Side Story...

Thanks for adding my "cool since" date. I can't believe I've been cool since the end of August. That's awesome. :)

I think you should decide. It's just too much for me to think about...

Number of comments for sure.

I myself vote for total number of comments. But Cadiz's comment on quality and quantity make me feel slightly guilty for all the haboob.
But then, should I ever feel guilty about haboob? It's a tough call. Just like this whole comment thing.
