Diversity in Woodworking
Black dude from NY makes stepstool and table
by Dave Summers

Part III of our "Diversity in Woodworking" series takes us to upstate New York, where Omar Phillips, a black guy, has assembled a stepstool AND a small table for his son. Omar took up an interest in woodworking earlier this year, and has since completed a continuing education woodworking class for beginners.

"Omar was the best minority in the class," said instructor John Wilson. When asked how many minorities were enrolled in the class, Wilson replied, "Now that I think about it, I guess it was just him. Not to take anything away from Omar though, he was great."

"Um, I don't really think of myself as a 'black' woodworker, or even a 'minority' woodworker. I kind of like to just be considered a woodworker," said Phillips.

A black idealist woodworker. It makes me proud to live in a country where such a thing exists.
